A Bunny Needlepoint Pillow
There are things I have a hard time passing by. I go to thrift stores frequently. Usually I walk in and out empty handed, but always ready for something to jump out and beg to be rescued. Needlepoint is one of them. I know, hanging cross stich or embroidery on a wall is completely outdated. But I still look at the time spent, colors woven to create a painting, and I see value. So I rescue it, nearly every single time.
I could almost write a book on needlepoint rescued. First it was the fall pheasant pillow. Then my mom’s spring embroidery pillow. Followed by her fall embroidery pillow. Last but not least was the stunning black and white farmhouse pillow which was the first one I sold. All works of art, updated to appreciate in a new way.
I found this little bunny a couple weeks ago, and imagined a spring pillow (because I really need more pillows, just ask my husband). I don’t do bunnies, Easter bunnies, spring bunnies, any bunnies really. But this one asked me to come home. My daughter declared it was hers, she loves bunnies. I had to break it to her it was everyone’s, really.
I unframed the cross-stitch and pulled out fabric from my stash to see what best made it pop as a frame work. I settled on this warm gold, which had actually been a throw pillow cover, one I bought several years back on clearance for $2.50 at Target. Then I pulled out some gold trim I had found at a thrift store ages ago (most likely anticipating military costumes for four boys who love to practice greatness). I knew it was a done deal. Not a normal accent color in my living room, however, a splash of sunshine warmth, inviting spring was welcome.
Usually I use a feather insert. However, because of its small size, I decided just to fill it with stuffing I had on hand.
I find it springy, and cheerful. The morning after I finished it, I was sipping my coffee looking out the window, and there hopped a bunny, the same colors as the one framed on the pillow, like the Velveteen Rabbit come to life.
My daughter thinks it’s her pillow. But it has found residence on the blue chair, for a season inviting all things new (I say as it snows heavily outside. Oh Alaska!)
Thanks again for stopping by!
Cheryl
Your pillow is beautiful! The colors are perfect with the rabbit. I feel the same way about cross stitch. I must admit I have some hanging on my walls as I made quite a few in my early years of marriage. I also purchased one two years ago with a beautiful hummingbird. Someone had lovingly cross stitched it, but was framed rather poorly and I ended up putting it into a mesh bag and washing it. It came out beautiful! My mom loves hummingbirds. I put it on a pillow And gifted this to her for her birthday. I am not very crafty but I will say that it looked really nice when I was finished.
I know how you feel about winter. On Sunday here in MI we received 4 inches of snow. Our poor birds who have been trying to build nest.
Dear Linda,
Well done! Needlepoint is such a lost art, and if we can find ways to keep on enjoying it, I think that is so wonderful. Making pillows is one of the first things I always teach my sewing students. It can be simple, but make such a huge impact in a room, especially something as stunning as needlepoint. Well, spring wishes on you and the birds! 🙂
Yes, I too see those discarded cross-stitch pieces at the thrift stores too.
They do looked dated as pictures but turn out very nice as pillows. I do have to admit to keeping one I did as a framed picture. It is a sampler and I still love it. A friend of mine has a whole wall of samplers and it looks great!!! Love the colors you picked to go with it….and don’t be surprised if “someone” sneaks it off to her bedroom!!!
Have a Blessed Easter!!!…..maybe you could show us “someone’s” Easter dress. 😉
I wouldn’t blame anyone for keeping a piece of needlepoint on their wall! It is a work of art unto itself.
Happy Easter to you. I won’t be posting clothes on the blog anymore, however, if you follow me on Instagram, I might sneak a photo in of a dress here or there. 🙂 Thanks for so faithfully following along!
Love,
Cheryl

Why no more clothes on the blog? No more sewing on the blog?
Your welcome!!! ….to my following your blog. It is always a pleasure to read of your doings and blessings.

For Instagram try: rufflesandrifles or Cheryl Licht. As far as the blog and refining of direction, it’s a matter of walking the path with the Lord, and sometimes things shift and change for many reasons. 🙂
This came out so beautifully. I love the gold fabric and how it sets off the design perfectly. Thanks for sharing this very inspiring repurpose of a needlework project.
Awww, thank you so much for the love. I feel like the gold does it justice as well. I kinda feel like I’m just re-framing a work of art. 🙂
